Dr. Apfel obtained her MD and PhD from the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany. In her PGY 3 year at UCSF, Dr. Apfel completed the Training in Clinical Research (TICR) Course and additional statistics courses in preparation for her research and joined the PTSD research team of Dr. Charles Marmar. She completed the RRTP in 2010, and was awarded a VA MIRECC fellowship. Dr. Apfel is currently working on the neuroimaging of PTSD with Dr. Thomas Neylan, Dr. Michael Weiner and Dr. Norbert Schuff.
She participated in the NIH sponsored Career Development Workshop of the Universities Pittsburgh/Stanford and the Young Investigators Meeting at the APA meeting in 2010. She has presented her research in several venues, including at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting and at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Her manuscript “Hippocampal Volume Differences in Gulf War Veterans with Current versus Lifetime PTSD Symptoms” is in press in Biological Psychiatry.
